Georg Jensen – Large Centerpiece Bowl #1287, Sterling Silver 925, Copenhagen 1986Design: Nanna Ditzel, circa 1980–1981 · Georg Jensen Silberschmiede · Scandinavian Modernism

A large centerpiece bowl in sterling silver 925, model #1287, designed by Nanna Ditzel circa 1980–1981 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen in 1986. The organic form with freely undulating edges — evoking the ripples of water — is characteristic of Nanna Ditzel's formal vocabulary in her mature period: no straight lines, no geometric constraint, a table sculpture that captures and redistributes light according to the angle of view. L = 48 cm · W = 37 cm · Weight: 2,910 g.

Nanna Ditzel (Copenhagen, 1923 – 2005) studied at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 1946. Her collaboration with Georg Jensen began in 1954 — she was the first woman ever to design for the house — and extended over more than half a century, resulting in over 150 works. She was appointed Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Arts in London in 1996.

Born in Copenhagen in 1923, Nanna Ditzel is one of Denmark's most accomplished designers. She studied at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 1946. She was appointed Royal Designer for Industry in 1996 by the Royal Society of Arts in London. Her works have been exhibited in Amsterdam, Berlin, New York, Paris, Milan, Vienna, Stockholm and London. The Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen holds a representative collection of her work.
