Evald Nielsen Art Deco Double Box In 830 Silver, Copenhagen Circa 1930

Artist: Evald Nielsen

Evald Nielsen – Double Lidded Box, Silver 830 and Fluted Bone, Copenhagen circa 1930Design and Execution: Evald Nielsen · Strict Modernism · Silver 830 · Fluted Bone · Rare Piece

A double box with two side-by-side hinged lids in silver 830, with natural fluted bone applications — a motif of strictly geometric parallel grooves — designed and executed by the Evald Nielsen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen circa 1930. Each half opens independently via a hinged lid. The parallel grooves of the bone create an austere linear rhythm of absolute modernity — no superfluous ornament, no historicist reference, a piece that anticipates the minimalist aesthetic of the post-war era. Width 20.2 cm · depth 8.4 cm · height 3.2 cm · weight 528 g. Bone intact.

Evald Nielsen (Stubbekøbing, island of Falster, 1879 – Copenhagen, 1958) is one of the most significant Danish silversmiths of the 20th century. Trained as a steel engraver at the August Fleron silversmith workshop in Copenhagen, he founded his own atelier in 1905 and developed a body of silversmithing and jewellery work of exceptional artistic quality — first in the Skønvirke style (Scandinavian Arts & Crafts), then in a resolutely modernist and functionalist language. Nielsen served as alderman of the Copenhagen Goldsmith Guild from 1918 and as chairman of the Danish Goldsmith Association from 1920 to 1946. His works are held in the collections of MoMA in New York, the Bröhan-Museum in Berlin and the GRASSI Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Leipzig.
