Artist: Georges Charles Coudray

Orivit No. 3019 – Jardinière "Nymph on the Wave"Design: Georges Charles Coudray · Orivit AG, Cologne-Ehrenfeld, circa 1904 · Patinated metal, partially gilded

A sculptural jardinière in Orivit metal depicting a nude female figure reclining on the crest of a breaking wave, whose form creates the basin. The figure, the interior of the basin, and the foam crests are gilded; the remaining surfaces are burnished or patinated. The signature "G. Coudray" appears on the side wall.

Georges Charles Coudray (Paris, 1862–1944), trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Falguière, Allouard, and Gabriel-Jules Thomas, was one of the principal sculptors collaborating with Orivit AG on its Art Nouveau metalwork. Model No. 3019 is documented in the firm's official trade catalogue — the same catalogue that records Orivit's participation in the Exposition Universelle Paris 1900, where the manufactory was awarded the gold medal. Orivit received further recognition at the Düsseldorf Industrial Exhibition of 1902, and won two Grand Prix prizes and a gold medal at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904.

Orivit works are held in the permanent collections of the Bröhan-Museum Berlin, the Kunstgewerbemuseum Cologne, and the Kreismuseum Zons — home to one of the most significant collections of Jugendstil pewter in Europe.
