Erfurt Baroque Silver Goblet With Noble Coat Of Arms Circa 1700

Artist: Egidius Rudolph Kindleb

Egidius Rudolph Kindleb, Erfurt – Baroque Silver Goblet, Partially Fire-Gilt, circa 1700–1708Egidius Rudolph Kindleb (master since 1685, mentioned until 1708, † 1713) · Erfurt · Silver 13 Loth · Fire Gilding · Engraved Arms EAW 1720 · Height 6 cm · Weight 83 g

A baroque goblet in partially gilt silver (parcel-gilt), Erfurt, circa 1700–1708. Height 6 cm · diameter 7.2 cm · weight 83 g. Exceptionally fine original fire gilding on the lip rim and interior. Engraving on the face: coat of arms EAW under an aristocratic crown with the year 1720. Marked on the underside with a double maker's mark ERK and a tremulation line (Tremulierungslinie). Silver 13 loth (?). Very good original condition.

The tremulation line (Tremulierungslinie) — a wavering line engraved along the outer edge — is a characteristic decorative and technical element of Central German Baroque silversmithing at the turn of the 18th century, particularly in use in Erfurt, Gotha and Thuringian workshops. The double maker's mark on the underside — double punch ERK — is a documented particularity of Egidius Rudolph Kindleb's hallmarking practice.

The engraving of the arms EAW under an aristocratic crown with the date 1720seven years after the death of the master — attests that the piece was engraved after its initial production, most likely on the occasion of a family gift or commemoration. This chronology is characteristic of baroque display cups that circulated among noble or bourgeois families and received successive engravings across generations.

Documented ecclesiastical provenance: a comparable cup by the same master Kindleb — bearing the same Erfurt city mark and master mark ERK — belongs to the collection of the Evangelical Church of Thuringia, attesting to the importance of this silversmith for the religious and aristocratic commissions of Erfurt at the turn of the 18th century.

Egidius Rudolph Kindleb, master silversmith in Erfurt since 1685, mentioned in archives until 1708, died 1713, is one of the most documented baroque Erfurt silversmiths of his generation, active during the period of artisanal prosperity in Erfurt under the domination of the Electorate of Mainz. His mark ERK is listed in Rosenberg, Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen.
