A wine glass in clear crystal with stylised roses painted in gold on the bowl, gilt border on the rim and foot, designed by Hans Christiansen circa 1903 within the Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt and executed by the Theresienthaler Krystallglasfabrik Egon von Poschinger circa 1903. Height 15.3 cm · upper diameter 8.7 cm · foot diameter 7.8 cm. Signed with the monogram HC engraved below the rose motif.

The stylised rose — drawn in continuous gold lines, constructed as a radiating geometric form — is the most characteristic ornament of Hans Christiansen, used in the most varied versions from quasi-naturalistic to fully abstract. The same rose decoration was used in 1903 on a porcelain dinner service. The rose motif was found with particular concentration in Christiansen's villa In Rosen on the Mathildenhöhe, where it adorned carpets, wallpapers and textile works — a total decorative coherence that is the very essence of the Künstlerkolonie's Gesamtkunstwerk ideal.

Comparable glasses are held in the Glassammlung Hentrich at the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf.

Hans Christiansen (Flensburg, 1866 – Wiesbaden, 1945), painter, graphic artist and designer, was one of the founding members of the Künstlerkolonie Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt, called by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse in 1899. He participated in the Darmstadt room at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 and realised in 1901 with Joseph Maria Olbrich his villa In Rosen on the Mathildenhöhe. His decorative vocabulary — dynamic, floral, influenced by the Parisian Art Nouveau of the journal Jugend and by Toulouse-Lautrec — made a decisive contribution to the emergence of the German Jugendstil.
