Gorham Mixed-metal Bowl, Providence, Rhode Island, United States, 1882

Artist: Gorham
Gorham Mixed-Metal Bowl, Providence, Rhode Island, USA, 1882

Exceptionally rare mixed-metal sterling silver bowl produced in 1882 by the renowned Gorham Manufacturing Company, one of the leading American silversmiths of the Aesthetic Movement period.

The circular bowl features a finely hand-hammered surface adorned with applied grape vines, leaves, grape clusters and stylized birds. The sophisticated use of multiple metals (Sterling & Other Metals) creates a rich decorative effect and represents one of the finest expressions of the American mixed-metal movement of the late nineteenth century.

Inspired by Japanese metalwork and the international fascination with Japonism, Gorham developed a distinctly modern design language that consciously departed from contemporary historicist styles. Alongside the celebrated works of Tiffany & Co., Gorham’s mixed-metal creations rank among the most important achievements of American art silver and are widely regarded as significant precursors to European Art Nouveau.

Combining exceptional craftsmanship with advanced artistic design, this bowl stands as an outstanding example of late nineteenth-century American decorative arts. Comparable pieces are today held in important museum collections, including the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest and major American decorative arts institutions.
