Artist: Ramsden Carr

Omar Ramsden & Alwyn Carr - Important Arts & Crafts covered inkwell in hammered silver, malachite cabochon, London, 1900

Superb covered inkwell fully within the scope of the English Arts & Crafts movement, made by Omar Ramsden in association with Alwyn Carr, the most accomplished and sought-after period of their joint production.

The piece adopts an architectural construction resting on a broad circular base, surmounted by a truncated-conical body made entirely of hammered silver, Ramsden's emblematic surface treatment. This hammering, deliberately visible and irregular, fully expresses the philosophy of the Arts & Crafts movement, valuing the craftsman's hand and the truth of the material.

The decor, of great sobriety, is punctuated by an applied, organically-inspired scrolling motif, characteristic of Ramsden's decorative vocabulary.

The hinged lid is adorned at its center with a large malachite cabochon, with deep, concentric veins, bringing a refined contrast and an almost jeweled dimension to the ensemble.

The object retains its removable glass cup.

The hallmarks confirm a London production for the year 1900 (letter-date E), with the Ramsden & Carr signature. Reference works emphasize that Ramsden's most important works came from this period of collaboration, reinforcing the interest of this example.

A particularly representative model.

A particularly representative model, combining plastic strength, exacting craftsmanship and quality of execution.
