Georg Jensen Candelabra N° 474. Johan Rohde, Sterling Silver, Copenhagen 1925-1932
Georg Jensen candelabra No. 474 - Johan Rohde - Sterling Silver - Copenhagen 1925-1932
Rare Georg Jensen five-arm candelabra in sterling silver, model No. 474, designed by Johan Rohde, executed by Georg Jensen goldsmiths, Copenhagen, 1925-1932. Height 42.2 cm, weight 1,821 g.
One of the most remarkable pieces of Georg Jensen Holloware production of the interwar period - of particular rarity in this period of early execution.
Georg Jensen Candelabra No. 474 [design and formal language]The N° 474 five-arm candelabra rests on a flat foot with chamfered edge, whose soothed horizontal contrasts with the slender stem. The central part bears a stylized pine cone decoration - a recurring motif in Johan Rohde's silver language, maintaining a precise balance between organic form and geometric rigor. The five arms develop symmetrically from the stem and end in smooth bobeches; their curved line lends the piece a remarkable lightness despite its monumentality. The hand-hammered surface features the lively texture characteristic of Georg Jensen sterling silver.
Johan Rohde and Georg Jensen [a partnership in design history]Johan Rohde (1856 Randers - 1935 Hellerup), Danish painter, engraver and designer, first came into contact with the young Georg Jensen silversmiths in 1907. What began as a visit became a lifelong artistic partnership and one of the most decisive collaborations in the history of Northern European applied arts. Rohde's creations for Georg Jensen now rank among the most sought-after classics of silver design: the ACORN / KONGE cutlery set (Drawing 62, 1915), the N° 432 pitcher (1920) and the Holloware series from the 1920s. The N° 474 candelabra follows in this line: formally sovereign, impeccably crafted.
Period of execution 1925-1932 [significance for collectors]Georg Jensen silver pieces from the 1925-1932 execution period bear the hallmarks of original Copenhagen silversmiths and are among the most sought-after items on the international market for Danish silverware and Scandinavian silver design. This period marks the peak of Georg Jensen's handcrafted production before the post-war expansion. Comparable pairs of model no. 474 in a later execution (Jensen & Wendel, 1945-51) have recently fetched five-figure dollar prices at international sales; isolated pieces from this period of early execution are rare on the market.
