Artist: Jean François Veyrat

Jean-François Veyrat – Rectangular Sterling Silver Entrée Dish with Cover, Paris 1831–1840 950 Silver · Louis-Philippe Period · Minerve Hallmark, First Standard

A rectangular entrée dish with cover in solid 950 silver, executed by the workshop of Jean-François Veyrat, silversmith active in Paris from 1831 to 1840, established at rue de la Tour. Minerve hallmark, first standard, first period. A highly elaborate piece of French decorative silversmithing in untouched original condition — without dents, creases or restoration of any kind.

The rectangular body with shaped corners is ornamented with oblique gadrooned borders at the base and cover, enriched with chased scrollwork and foliage. The removable bayonet handle in the form of a fruit is decorated with garlands of fruits, foliage and flowers — a standard of chasing and decorative richness characteristic of the finest Parisian silversmithing of the Louis-Philippe era.

The Veyrat workshop ranked among the most distinguished Parisian silversmiths of its time. Works by Jean-François Veyrat are held in the permanent collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Bordeaux, the Musée National Magnin in Dijon, and the Musée des Arts de la Table at the Abbaye de Belleperche.
