Modern Sterling Silver Ladle, Design Boris Bally 1992, Rhode Island, Us
Boris Bally – XXL Serving Spoon / Ladle, Sterling Silver 925 and Ebony, Rhode Island 1992Design and Execution: Boris Bally · Silver 925 · Ebony · Collector's Piece · Copyright 1992
An XXL serving spoon in sterling silver 925 with ebony handle, designed and executed by Boris Bally in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1992. The piece presents a generous oval silver bowl with tapered edges and a gently curved surface — a form of absolute sculptural purity, without ornament, entirely defined by the tension of the silver surface. The ebony handle is fitted with a sterling silver 925 collar secured by round rivets — the junction between precious metal and noble wood treated with the precision of a jeweller. Marked ©'92 BALLY .925. Length 35.3 cm.
Boris Bally (born 1961 in Chicago to Swiss parents) is one of the most influential American silversmiths and designers of his generation. Trained as a goldsmith in Switzerland, he earned his degree at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh before establishing himself in Providence, Rhode Island. His work — which deliberately blurs the boundaries between art, design and craft — earned him an interview for the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art Oral History Project. His pieces are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum / Renwick Gallery in Washington.
