Pair Of Elegant German Silver Candlesticks, Count's Monogram Bc Probably Schwerin, Circa 1820
An attractive pair of small German silver candlesticks dating from the early 19th century, probably Schwerin, circa 1820.
The candlesticks are distinguished by their elegant simplicity and beautifully balanced proportions. Each features a square, slightly raised base supporting a tapered foot, a finely articulated baluster stem and a cylindrical candle socket.
The restrained design gives these pieces a timeless elegance characteristic of the early 19th century.
Of particular interest are the finely engraved intertwined initials “BC” beneath a nine-pointed count's coronet on each square base, indicating an original owner of comital rank. The family has not yet been identified.
Given their relatively small dimensions, these candlesticks were probably intended for use on a writing desk, card table or travelling writing set. They may also have been used on the small extending surfaces of period furniture.
The candlesticks are of traditional assembled construction.
Hallmarks and DatingThe town mark appears to resemble that of Schwerin, Germany, although this attribution remains to be confirmed.
Unusually, no clearly identifiable maker's mark is visible.
A tremolier test mark is present. The silver may be of approximately 12-loth standard, although the fineness has not been independently verified.
Stylistically, the candlesticks date to approximately 1820.
