The openwork wedding basket (Hochzeitskorb) — with its symbolic decoration of doves representing marital fidelity, putti evoking love, and flower garlands celebrating the occasion — is one of the most characteristic table silverware forms of Hanau production at the turn of the 20th century. Hanau, a major centre of silverware production since the 17th century, was at the turn of the 20th century the European capital of quality silverware in historicist and neo-Rococo decoration, producing for the German, Austro-Hungarian and international markets.
