Porcelain Eggshell Lidded Vase With Thistle Decoration, Painting By Samuel Schellink,

Artist: Samuel Schellink

Rozenburg The Hague – Eggshell Porcelain Lidded Vase, Thistle Decoration Painter: Samuel Schellink · Form: Jurriaan Kok · Haagsche Plateelbakkerij, The Hague, 1899 Documented in Kunstgewerbeblatt, N.F. XII, H. 5 (1901)

A square-section lidded vase in eggshell porcelain (eierschaalporselein), painted by Samuel Schellink, form designed by Jurriaan Kok, executed at the Haagsche Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg, The Hague, 1899. Decoration of thistles (Cirsium) in turquoise, rose and ochre on a cream ground, rendered with the naturalistic precision and characteristic lightness of Schellink's finest work. Lid with scroll-form knop. Green factory mark on base, year letter, order number 963, painter's signature.

Piece documented in contemporary literature: a lidded vase of the same form and comparable decoration is reproduced in Kunstgewerbeblatt, Neue Folge XII, Heft 5 (1901), illustrated with the caption: „Weichporzellan mit Unterglasurfarben, Entw. von Jurriaan Kok, Fabrik Rozenburg im Haag" — testimony to the immediate international reception of these creations in the European specialist press.

Rozenburg eggshell porcelain is one of the most extraordinary technical achievements of European Art Nouveau — walls of an almost impossible thinness and translucency, achieved after years of secret experimentation under the direction of Jurriaan Kok. Presented for the first time at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, it met with immediate success and was acquired on the spot by the leading European museums.

Rozenburg eggshell porcelain was immediately purchased by major European museums such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, which appreciated its exceptional quality and innovative character. Kunstconsult

Rozenburg pieces are held in the permanent collections of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
