Georg Jensen – Large XL Lidded Box #857, Sterling Silver, Copenhagen 1933–1944Design: Jørgen Jensen circa 1938 · Art Déco · Pre-war · Silver 925 · Heavy Quality

A large rectangular lidded box in sterling silver 925, model #857 — large format variant — designed by Jørgen Jensen circa 1938 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen between 1933 and 1944. Strictly geometric lines, flat lid, heavy and massive construction — the most accomplished and imposing expression of the Silberschmiede's late Art Déco vocabulary. Ideal as a desk box, playing card box or XXL cigarette box. Dimensions: 23.3 × 14 cm · height 4.5 cm. Square Georg Jensen hallmark 1933–1944.

The 1933–1944 production period — identifiable by the square Georg Jensen hallmark — is the most sought-after by informed collectors: it corresponds to the artistic and artisanal apogée of the Silberschmiede in the inter-war years, before the production constraints imposed by the conflict. The large format of this model #857 is significantly rarer than the standard variant.

Jørgen Jensen (1895–1966), son of founder Georg Jensen, worked as a designer for the family Silberschmiede from the 1930s. His style — geometric, functionalist, of absolute restraint — is characteristic of the house's late Art Déco production. He is notably the author of the Skyscraper condiment set (#793, 1936), one of the most radically modernist creations in the history of Georg Jensen. Works by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede are held in the collections of the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, MoMA in New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
