Louis Majorelle – Two-Tier Side Table, Mahogany and Gilt Bronze, Nancy circa 1900 École de Nancy · Art Nouveau · Floral Bronze Mounts · Signed

A two-tier side table in solid mahogany, designed and executed by the workshops of Louis Majorelle in Nancy circa 1900. The upper top of slightly trapezoidal form with rounded corners, lower shelf of matching profile. Four elegantly curved mahogany legs, each fitted with a floral gilt bronze mount — sabots in the form of lancet leaves, of remarkable precision and quality of execution. Signed L. Majorelle.

The gilt bronze mounts are one of the most distinctive signatures of Majorelle's production around 1900: from 1897, Majorelle developed a dedicated metalworking and bronze atelier at his workshops on the rue du Vieil-Aître in Nancy, whose creations adorned both luxury furniture and the railings, balconies and façades of Nancy's buildings. The combination of mahogany and gilt bronze is the most accomplished expression of this formal language.

Louis Majorelle (Toul, 1859 – Nancy, 1926) was one of the founding vice-presidents of the École de Nancy in 1901 and one of the most celebrated figures of the French Art Nouveau movement. He was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur at the Salon of 1900. At the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, his designs triumphed and earned him an international clientele. His works are held in the collections of the Musée de l'École de Nancy, the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
