The Bitter & Gobbers Metallwarenfabrik — founded in Krefeld in 1900 by Peter Bitter and commercial associate Wilhelm Gobbers under the name Crefelder Metallwaren-Fabrik Bitter & Gobbers GmbH — was one of the most significant Art Nouveau metalware manufactories of the Rhenish region, producing under the Imperial Zinn brand high-quality pieces in pewter and copper-plated and gilt Britannia metal. The house collaborated with French artists including the sculptor Maurel, attesting to an international ambition comparable to that of the Orivit AG in Cologne-Ehrenfeld or the Metallwarenfabrik Walter Scherf & Co. in Nuremberg.
The pair of candelabra #5415 — at an imposing height of 50.5 cm — represents one of the most spectacular formats in the Bitter & Gobbers production: the five-flame structure, the gilding over a copper ground and the quality of execution of the Britannia metal place these candelabra in the category of statement pieces, destined for the most ambitious interiors of the Belle Époque Rhineland.
A note for collectors and enthusiasts: the Kreismuseum Zons opens on 13 May 2026 the new exhibition „Selten. Silber. Orivit. Rheinische Jugendstilschätze mit internationalem Flair." — a presentation of rare Orivit silver objects alongside the museum's permanent Jugendstil pewter collection, just a few kilometres from Düsseldorf. A unique opportunity to discover the historical context of these candelabra.
