A creamer / cream pot with natural bone handle, model #2C, Blossom / Magnolia collection, in sterling silver 925, designed by Georg Jensen circa 1904–1905 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen circa 1950. Height 6.6 cm · width 15.3 cm · diameter 8.7 cm. Georg Jensen hallmark circa 1950.
The natural bone handle — a noble material, warm to the touch and of discreet elegance — is the original variant of the Blossom collection for handled pieces: teapots, coffee pots, creamers. The combination of repoussé sterling silver and bone reflects Georg Jensen's preference for contrasting natural materials — a guiding principle throughout his entire œuvre, echoing the spirit of Scandinavian Arts & Crafts as much as Art Nouveau.
The Blossom collection — called Magnolia in Danish — is Georg Jensen's first hollowware creation: the 1905 teapot, topped with a magnolia bud and balanced on toad feet, was the founding work that revealed his genius. The floral motif — a stem winding upwards to emerge as a flower bud on the verge of opening — is the most personal and accomplished expression of Scandinavian Art Nouveau applied to silversmithing. The Blossom flatware pattern #84, introduced in 1919, is the most exclusive and labour-intensive in the entire Jensen production — entirely handwrought.
Upon his death in 1935, the New York Herald Tribune saluted Georg Jensen as "the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years." His works are held in the collections of the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen and MoMA in New York.
