Georg Jensen – Round Serving Tray #1116, Sterling Silver and Plasticine, Copenhagen circa 1970Design: Søren Georg Jensen 1963 · Mid-Century Modern · Space Age · Silver 925

A round serving tray in sterling silver 925 with modelled plasticine application, model #1116, designed by Søren Georg Jensen in 1963 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen circa 1970. Diameter 32.2 cm · width with handles 40 cm · edge height 2.7 cm. Georg Jensen hallmark circa 1970.

The combination of sterling silver and plasticine — a modelling material wholly unexpected in the context of prestige silversmithing — is characteristic of Søren Georg Jensen's creative approach: as much sculptor as silversmith, he introduced into the Silberschmiede's production a resolutely modern formal vocabulary, marked by the spirit of Space Age and Mid-Century Design of the 1960s.

Søren Georg Jensen (Copenhagen, 1917 – 1982), son of founder Georg Jensen, was trained in silversmithing by his father before studying sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and subsequently under sculptor Ossip Zadkine in Paris in 1946. From 1962 to 1974 he served as artistic director of the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede, where he created a series of major hollowware pieces while pursuing a monumental sculptural œuvre — often working in his studio at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. A work by Søren Georg Jensen is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
