A large covered jam pot, model #2A, Blossom / Magnolia collection, in sterling silver 925 with Baccarat crystal insert, designed by Georg Jensen in 1905 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen circa 1950. Diameter 11.6 cm · height without lid 6.4 cm · height with lid approx. 9.6 cm. Georg Jensen hallmark circa 1950. Crystal insert marked Baccarat France on the underside.
The combination of the sterling silver Blossom lid and the Baccarat crystal body — the Lorraine glassworks founded in 1764 and supplier to the royal courts of Europe — unites two houses of absolute excellence: the Copenhagen Silberschmiede and the world's reference crystal manufactory. This Franco-Danish hybrid piece is one of the most refined table objects the Jensen production ever offered.
The Blossom collection — called Magnolia in Danish — is Georg Jensen's first hollowware creation: the 1905 teapot, topped with a magnolia bud and balanced on toad feet, was the founding work that revealed his genius. The floral motif — a stem winding around the handle to emerge as a flower bud on the verge of opening — is the most personal and accomplished expression of Scandinavian Art Nouveau applied to silversmithing. The Blossom flatware pattern #84, introduced in 1919, is the most exclusive and labour-intensive in the entire Jensen production — entirely handwrought.
Upon his death in 1935, the New York Herald Tribune saluted Georg Jensen as "the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years." His works are held in the collections of the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen and MoMA in New York.
