A large fruit and salad bowl in sterling silver 925, model #1131A, designed by Henning Koppel in 1965 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen. The spherical form with a gently contracted rim — pure, taut, without ornament — is the most accomplished expression of Koppel's sculptural vocabulary applied to tableware: a functional sculpture that captures light with the same sensibility as a work of art. Henning Koppel (Copenhagen, 1918 – 1981), Danish sculptor and designer, joined Georg Jensen in 1945 after studying sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and at the Académie Ranson in Paris. His collaboration with the house, which lasted his entire life, revolutionised Danish design by introducing organic, fluid and sculptural forms — a formal language that broke with the functionalist tradition to embrace a living, modern aesthetic. His creations for Georg Jensen earned him three gold medals at the Milan Triennale (1951, 1954 and 1957) and the Lunning Prize in 1953. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen and MoMA in New York.
