Pair Of Sèvres-style Porcelain Knife Rests With Polychrome Chinese Figures, Circa 1900
A pair of knife rests made of polychrome glazed porcelain, depicting Chinese dignitaries or sages (magots) lying on their stomachs.
Each figure, bearded and moustachioed, wears a pointed yellow hat topped with a headdress decorated with interlocking scales (purplish pink for one, blue for the other) and is clad in a scholar’s robe with a floral design in the Famille Rose style (peonies, Indian flowers and stylised foliage). The curve of their elongated backs forms the cradle designed to hold the tableware.
Marked on the underside with a double intertwined letter ‘L’ painted in grand feu blue, accompanied by the apocryphal inscription ‘A Sèvres’ and the date letter ‘V’.
