South Asian Carved And Stained Bone Mosaic Ceremonial Elephant, 20th Centur

A ceremonial elephant sculpture crafted using marquetry of carved, engraved and stained bone inlays, mounted on a wooden core. The animal is depicted standing, its trunk raised in greeting, adorned with a rich ceremonial caparison decorated with engraved geometric friezes, fringes and a central panel depicting a figure (a deity or musician). The head and rump are embellished with floral medallions set in relief and highlighted with polychrome accents (green and red).
From South Asia (probably India or China). 20th century.

Good condition

This sculpture is part of the long tradition of Asian arts and crafts, and more specifically of prestigious decorative pieces made from bovine bone, developed as a virtuous and technically advanced alternative to ivory carving. The method involves the meticulous fitting together of dozens of thin bone slats, which are patiently engraved and then fixed to an internal structure carved from wood. The elephant, a symbol of wisdom, strength and good fortune, is depicted here adorned in the regalia of a princely festival, evoking the splendour of royal processions in South Asia. The graphic treatment of the ink engravings and the relief inlays demonstrate a level of decorative craftsmanship and patience that was particularly sought after for curiosities cabinet pieces in the 20th century.

This item is in the tradition of beautifully crafted ethnic art and furnishings, and is a fine example of bone marquetry featuring traditional engraved decoration.
