HAMILTON & INCHES / VINCENTI & CIE
A Louis XIV-style table clock in red tortoiseshell (or Boulle-style marquetry) with gilded bronze fittings. The cream-coloured enamel dial with Roman numerals bears the faded signature ‘Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh’. The two-wheel train movement, stamped with the ‘Vincenti & Cie’ medallion, strikes the hour on a gong and bears the serial number ‘39156’, identical to that of its original balance wheel.
The caddy-top-shaped chest is crowned with a gilded bronze fire pot and corner finials, flanked by a curved pediment featuring a female mask, and rests on four legs with foliage scrolls.
Late 19th century (circa 1890–1900).
