Originating from the Vetka iconographic centre, a major centre of devotion for the Old Believers, this icon is distinguished by its rich, hierarchically structured composition. The upper register features a bust of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, flanked by the holy martyr princes Boris and Gleb. The lower register features a row of patron saints and guardian angels, commissioned for a family’s personal devotional purposes. The border is decorated with a chiselled foliage scroll motif typical of Vetka’s work, which seeks to imitate goldsmith’s craftsmanship.
