Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky (1839-1915) was a major Russian painter of the second half of the 19th century, trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. A founding member of the Wanderers (Peredvizhniki) movement, he is best known for his portraits, historical compositions and scenes inspired by Old Russia.
Renowned for the richness of his palette, the virtuosity of his drawing and the refinement of his decorative details, Makovsky enjoyed great success both in Russia and abroad. His works, often marked by a fascination for traditional costumes, historical subjects and aristocratic life, reflect his attachment to Russian cultural identity.
A celebrated artist during his lifetime, he exhibited widely throughout Europe and remains today one of the most important representatives of late 19th-century Russian academic painting.
