Georg Jensen Sigvard Bernadotte Mid-century Modern Pair Of Candelabras 1050, Sterling Silver
Georg Jensen – Pair of Two-Armed Candelabra #1050, Bernadotte, Sterling Silver Design: Sigvard Bernadotte, 1956 · Georg Jensen Silversmiths, Copenhagen, circa 1960 · Mid-Century Modern
A pair of two-armed candelabra #1050 in sterling silver, designed by Sigvard Bernadotte for Georg Jensen, produced in Copenhagen circa 1960. Each candelabrum rises from a circular guilloche base, with two crossed stems opening into a double S-curve — a silhouette of striking elegance, as compelling unlit as when holding candles.
The crossed-stem form irresistibly recalls the characteristic posture of the great porcelain figures of the same era — legs elegantly crossed, body in gentle undulation — such as Josef Wackerle's celebrated Dutch Smokers (Raucher, models 577/578, 1924) for the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg. What Wackerle expressed in the rounded volume of porcelain, Bernadotte restated thirty years later in the pure line of silver: the same nonchalant elegance, the same double S-inflection, the same balance between tension and ease. A formal ideal of the interwar period, brought to full maturity in metal.
Sigvard Bernadotte (Drottningholm, 1907 – Stockholm, 2002), son of King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden and great-grandson of Queen Victoria, renounced his royal titles in 1934 to devote himself to design. He joined Georg Jensen as artistic director, revolutionizing the firm's visual language with a geometric functionalism of absolute modernity. His coffee service #849, presented at the 1939 New York World's Fair, was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His works are also held in the collections of the British Museum in London and the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen.
