A pair of Chinese porcelain baluster vases in Famille Rose enamels, Canton, late 19th century. White porcelain body from Jingdezhen, decorated in Canton for the export market. Height 24.5 cm each.
Decoration: cartouche panels with palace scenes (court scenes) depicting noble figures in imperial pavilions and gardens — a characteristic motif of Cantonese export production in the second half of the 19th century. Ground of polychrome floral scrollwork in pink, green, yellow and blue enamels. The neck with applied plastic elements: Fo dogs (shishi, guardian lions) and chilongs (hornless dragons) highlighted in gold — protective decorative elements emblematic of Cantonese export porcelain.
Canton Famille Rose porcelain (fencai, 粉彩) — a term introduced in 1862 by Albert Jacquemart to designate the pink enamels of the Qing period — was the dominant form of Chinese ceramic export to Europe and America in the 19th century. White porcelain from Jingdezhen, painted in Canton's specialist export workshops, reached under the Guangxu period (1875–1908) a remarkable decorative density, characterised by the profusion of cartouche panels, the richness of floral grounds and the quality of the gilt applied elements.
