Art Nouveau Meissen Porcelain, Saxonia Pattern Coffee Cup, Oe Voigt 1904

Royal Meissen Manufactory – Art Nouveau Coffee Cup, Saxonia Pattern, Design Otto Eduard Voigt, March 1904Otto Eduard Voigt (Dresden 1870 – Meissen 1949) · Royal Meissen Manufactory · Knauf Sword Mark · Underglaze Light Grey and Cobalt Blue · Very Rare

A Meissen porcelain coffee cup, Saxonia pattern, designed by Otto Eduard Voigt in March 1904 and executed by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen circa 1904–1910. Height 7 cm · width with handle 9.5 cm · diameter 7.4 cm · press no. 127. Saucer: diameter 13.5 cm. Marks on the base: knauf crossed swords (Knaufschwerter) and two grinding marks. Very good original condition. Of extreme rarity.

The Saxonia decoration — sinuous underglaze botanical motifs in pale grey and cobalt blue, of a sobriety and modernity striking for the Meissen Manufactory — represents one of the most radically Art Nouveau contributions to Meissen's production of the period, contemporary with the creations of Rudolf Hentschel (Flügelmuster, 1901), Henry van de Velde (Peitschenhieb, 1904) and Richard Riemerschmid (Rispe, 1904). The Saxonia pattern is reproduced on page 245 of the reference catalogue Jugendstil in Dresden (1999), alongside these great signatures of German Jugendstil.

Public collections: the Saxonia service is represented in the collections of the Bröhan-Museum, Berlin (tea service, without cream jug) · Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge · Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (one of the most comprehensive Saxonia collections) · Staatliche Galerie Moritzburg, Halle · The Wolfsonian — Florida International University.

Otto Eduard Voigt (Dresden, 1870 – Meissen, 1949) trained at Villeroy & Boch in Dresden, worked as a painter at the KPM Berlin from 1890 to 1895, then as painter and designer at the Meissen Manufactory from 1896 to 1932. He created not only numerous animal and botanical decoration designs but also complete vessel forms. He played a determining role in the pioneering development of the high-fire technique (Scharffeuertechnik) at Meissen.
