Senior Officer's Saber Empire Consulate, Silver
A senior officer’s saber, possibly a staff officer’s, given the engraved decorations and motifs.
Single-branch guard engraved with foliage and oak leaves; melon-shaped cap; ebony tang with a checkered pattern.
Almond-shaped pommels, also chiseled.
Curved blade, 83 cm long, gilded and blued one-third of the way up.
Leather scabbard with a wooden liner featuring three silver fittings chiseled in a continuous pattern of oak leaves.
The scabbard has shrunk over time and is open at the front in places.
The blade fits completely into the scabbard but is tight.
All parts are made of silver and hallmarked by the guild of silversmiths, 1794–1797; by master silversmith JML, surmounted by a goose pierced by a stylus: Jean Marie Laurent, cutler, 17 rue de la Huchette, indicted in 1805
