Object description :

"Officer's Saber "mameluk Style" Or "oriental Style". French Consulate, 1st Empire"
This saber is called "Mameluk" or "Oriental" and dates from the Consulate-Empire period. Bonaparte's officers were very impressed by the sabers of the Egyptian Mameluks and many colonels and generals wanted to have this type of saber, and even more of them after the creation of the Mameluk Guard Corps which reinforced this fashion.
The blade of this saber is flat, as in the majority of cases. It is an oriental blade. The mount is French, Napoleonic.
BLADE : it is a flat blade with a single edge, which has a very strong curvature. The curvature is 8.7 cm. The blade appears to be made of Damascus steel, but it would have to pass through the hands of a specialist to reveal this Damascus which is only supposed.
Length of the blade in a straight line = 80.5 cm, width at the heel = 2.4 cm, thickness at the heel 4.6 mm
GUARD: it is a wide cruise in gilded brass, significantly larger than the guards of the original oriental sabers. The rectangular shape of the ear in its part which is on the side of the blade is also typically western.
HANDLE: made of 2 plates of blond horn ending in a ball. At the level of this ball, we find the hole intended for the tassel ring, protected by brass rivets. We will note a small repair at the base of a plate on the external face
SCABBARD : it is a quality scabbard, in wood covered with leather closed by a very beautiful canetille stitching. The scabbard entrance is covered with brass, it is split to allow the blade to pass through. It has at its base a bracelet with a suspension ring. A second suspension ring is attached to a second gilded brass bracelet a dozen centimeters further. The brass chape is finished with a reinforced part intended to protect the tip of the scabbard.

Oriental sabers are an integral part of the Imperial epic, and they were very popular with officers. Obviously their mounting was not regulated and depended on the whimsy and fortune of each officer.
