Object description :

"Tanto, Japanese Bone-mounted Dagger. Meiji Period"
This Japanese tanto is typical of the Meiji period (1868-1912). Its entire mount is made of engraved bone. The blade is of low quality, as always on these weapons. The scabbard decoration takes up one more version of the famous Japanese drama of historical inspiration "the revenge of the Soga brothers" in which the two brothers, after years of waiting, will take revenge on their father's murderer by killing him and then claiming their act in the name of filial piety.
BLADE: It is a small Hira zukuri (flat) blade which is of modest quality, and not tempered, although it has a completely traditional shape. Obviously, it is not intended for combat. It is mounted in a classic way with a red copper habaki. Nagasa = 13.9 cm, Moto haba = 2 cm, Moto Kasane 2.3 mm
TSUBA : it is made of bone, with a small engraved decoration.
HILT : It is made of bone, with an engraved decoration, which probably represents Ito Suke Michi, the father of the 2 Soga brothers, who was assassinated by his cousin Kudo Suke Tsune. He wears a monastic headdress.
SCABBARD: It is made of bone, with a representation of the two Soga brothers in armor, who approach Suke Tsune, represented in court dress, since he was part of the shogun's entourage. This scabbard is absolutely complete and even has a fully functional bone kurigata (fastening system) to allow carrying.
This weapon is modest but complete, in very good condition and of a moderate price. It is typical of the achievements of Japanese craftsmen in the Meiji period.
