Chilean Bowie-type Cutlass, Late 19th Century flag

Object description :

"Chilean Bowie-type Cutlass, Late 19th Century"
It is a knife from the “Bowies” family, originating from South America. The style of the mount allows it to be located more precisely in Chile, where some authors call it "Facon".
BLADE: This is a strong cutlass blade, which has the characteristic shape of bowies. After a ricasso of 2 cm, the blade is single-edged. The back has small “cutaway” faces which continue to the tip, meetingto form the false edge .
At the level of the ricasso, on each side, remains of erased inscription, in cursive letters, which I cannot decipher.
Length of the blade = 22.3 cm width at the level of the ricasso, 3.7 cm, Thickness at the level of the ricasso = 0.7 cm
GUARD: small oval silver guard
HILT : It is made of hard wood, probably boxwood, with 6 braids inside 6 fullers of twisted silver which go from the lower ferrule to the pommel.
The pommel is a silver cone, through which the tang is riveted.
SCABBARD: It is made of cowhide, stitched, with three silver fittings, linked together by small decorative chains. These chains were in places glued to the leather of the scabbard, probably to prevent their loss.

The weapon is very nice and rare to encounter. It evokes the time of adventurers who went looking for gold in Patagonia at the end of the 19th century.
