French Maréchaussée Saber 1783, Blade From The Carabiniers Regiment Of Monsieur

Artist: Manufacture De Klingenthal
This saber is very special because its blade was originally intended for the saber of Monsieur's Carabiniers Regiment. It is a rarity. The scabbard is also very unusual. (Monsieur = King's brother)
BLADE : It is the straight blade with two flat sides and the point in line with the back edge, characteristic of the 1767 and 1777 models. What is very particular is the marking "MANUFre DE KLINGENTHAL" on the blade's flat, on each side, surmounted by a large grenade, and decorated below with a small motif known as a "cul de lampe" (lampe tail). According to the Klingenthal archives, this type of marking is only recorded for the saber blades of Monsieur's Carabiniers, model 1777. Upon close inspection, one can find the beginning of the letter M for "MONSIEUR" on one side and the R for "REGIMENT" on the other. On both sides, there are remnants of the engraving of the radiant sun. The blade bears a crowned B mark, indicating Bisch, first-class controller from 1783 to 1791, and a crowned J mark, indicating Juchereau, inspector from 1787 to 1789 and then director from 1790 to 1791. These marks are identical to those of the model illustrated in the Ariès notebooks. It is therefore indeed a blade intended for Monsieur's Carabiniers Regiment, of the 1777 model, whose markings were deliberately erased during the Revolution to conform to the prevailing ideology. This blade was fitted to a 1783 model constabulary saber. The scabbard dates from the time of this conversion, i.e., from 1793 and later.
Blade length = 83 cm, width at the ricasso 3.4 cm, thickness at the ricasso 9.9 mm. This 3.4 cm width at the ricasso corresponds to the regulations for the blade intended for the Carabiniers of Monsieur (the French Royal Carabiniers), since the regulation blade of the 1783 model of the Maréchaussée (the French military police) measures only 2.9 cm at the ricasso.
HILT : It is a palmette-shaped guard, with a main branch?  or knuckle bow, that fits under the pommel, and two secondary branches that extend from the palmette to the main branch. A small, flattened, teardrop-shaped quillon completes the guard. The pomme cap l has a short tail and is surmounted by a brass rivet button, onto which the tang of the blade is riveted. This type of mounting was intended to allow the blade to be disassembled without damaging the pommel (particularly for repairing the wire wrapping). The grip is made of wood covered with heavy twisted chevron wire wrapping, in very good condition, without any missing pieces or breaks.
SCABBARD : This is a rather unusual scabbard, as it features an opening, two intermediate pieces, and a chape, all made of brass. The chape's spike is made of iron. The brass elements of the scabbard are connected by braces/ splints which reinforce the weapon's strength. It is clear that all these modifications were made at the time to increase the scabbard's durability. This weapon likely saw action on many battlefields…
