The shape of the blade, the shape of the scabbard, the handle and the metal ring are characteristic of this region of Surakarta. The solidity of the blade, the quality of the forging, and the high qualityof the making of the mount exclude a contemporary work for tourists.
The dating of these kriss is always difficult, to be on the safe side I will place it in the end of the 19th century, or the beginning of the 20th, but it is possible that we are in the presence of a much older blade.
BLADE: It is a straight blade, very robust, in pamor. Length of the blade = 32.5 cm, width near the handle 7.8 cm
HANDLE: it is in the style of the Surakarta school, in quality light wood, and presents two representations of masks of deities or stylized protective ancestors. It is connected to the blade by a metal ring encrusted with precious stones.
SCABBARD: it is perfectly fitted to the blade, and in excellent condition. The lower part is covered with a thick silver sheet, which frames a central part in very richly chiseled gilded brass.
The quality of the object speaks for itself in the photos. It is a quality weapon, carefully made for a patron of good taste.
