Iron Maru-gata Tsuba, Edo Period (1603–1868)
A very simple iron tsuba in the round "Maru-Gata" style, featuring openwork (sukashi) with five-petaled Sakura cherry blossom motifs on either side of the nakago-ana, the central perforation.
Positioned between the blade and the hilt, the tsuba not only protects the wearer’s hand from blows by an enemy’s weapon but also serves as a counterweight for the sword’s overall balance.
Over time, tsubas have become true works of art highly sought after by collectors.
