Tsuba Mokko-gata In Shakudō With Plant Decoration – Japan, Edo Period (17th–19th Century)
An elegant mokko-gata sword hilt, crafted from deep black patinated shakudō, rests on a finely worked and remarkably even nanako background.
The takabori decoration depicts a stylized Virginia creeper with trilobed leaves and sinuous tendrils. Some leaves and buds are highlighted with gilded zōgan-style metal inlays, providing a subtle contrast to the dark patina of the metal.
The consistent treatment of both sides and the quality of the nanako suggest a production influenced by the Nara school.
