Iron Tsuba Decorated With Karakusa In Zōgan Brass Edo Period (17th–18th Century)
A circular tsuba (maru-gata) made of dark brown patinated iron, with finely inlaid brass vegetal decoration (zōgan). The ornamentation largely covers the surface and consists of stylized scrolls (karakusa) adorned with buds and sinuous leaves, rendered with elegance and regularity.
The composition is balanced, revealing two wide sukashi-type lateral openings, lending lightness and dynamism to the whole. The nakago-ana is of traditional form, showing traces of previous adjustments.
The continuous brass scroll decoration on a dark iron background is characteristic of the productions of the Heianjō (Kyoto) school.
