Iron Tsuba Maru-gata Decorated With Floral Wheels – Japan, Edo Period, 17th–18th Century
Circular wrought iron tsuba (maru-gata) with a deep brown-black patina and a finely hammered surface (discreet tsuchime-ji).
Openwork decoration (sukashi) composed of six circular medallions evenly spaced around the perimeter. Each medallion contains a stylized five-petaled flower within a wheel.
The background is enlivened by a dense network of interlacing and linear vegetal motifs executed in flat brass inlay (heirin-zōgan), a technique consisting of setting thin strips into previously incised grooves.
Slightly trapezoidal nakago-ana, consistent with a katana hilt. No visible hitsu-ana or one discreetly integrated into the composition.
