Iron Tsuba Inlaid With Brass, Japan, Edo Period (17th–19th Century)

A maru-gata (round) wrought iron handguard with a deep, dark brown patina, decorated with brass inlays (using the heirin-zōgan technique).

The decoration features six openwork circular medallions arranged around the perimeter, each adorned with a stylized five-petaled floral motif within a wheel.

The whole is connected by a dense network of geometric scrolls and linear interlacing patterns inlaid in brass, creating an elegant contrast against the hammered background.
