French 17th-century Powder Flask Known As A "musketeer's Flask"
This powder flask is interesting. Powder flasks of this type are traditionally classified as "musketeer powder flasks," although no official regulation model existed. Indeed, despite the fine novels of Alexandre Dumas, it's worth remembering thatthe word "musketeer" contains "musket," and muskets were the primary weapons of these soldiers.
These powder flasks are characterized by being made of wood covered in studded leather and by being quite large. Later, the design was adopted in Roussillon and even sometimes in North Africa, but with more modest dimensions and a generally significantly lower quality of workmanship.
The body of the powder flask is flat on one side and has two faces on the other that meet at a central ridge. All sides are covered with old leather decorated with brass studs.
The spout is made of bone, is a good size, and is securely attached to the body of the flask.
A two-tone cotton cord completes the item.
Powder flask in its original, unrestored condition.
