"boiled Leather" Powder Flask From Northern Italy
A rare powder flask, known as a "boiled leather" flask, originating from Italy around 1580. This military-style powder flask was used in combat during the 16th century. Its base is made of boiled leather, hence its name. The leather was boiled in oil and then pressed to achieve the desired shape, sometimes adorned with decorations made using metal tools. The flask has a triangular body with a plano-convex cross-section. The leather front is decorated with a symmetrical motif: a lozenge-shaped cartouche in the center, surrounded by triangular cartouches depicting dogs and swans. The base and stopper are made of smooth metal with a chiseled edge. The spout, fitted with a powder-dispensing spring, is adorned with a baluster-shaped knob. The back of the flask is flattened, revealing a wooden core beneath areas where the leather is partially missing.
