Italian Powder Flask Made Of "boiled Leather" Rope
A rare Italian boiled leather powder flask, dating from around 1580. This military model was carried in combat during the 16th century. Its body is made of boiled leather, obtained by boiling the leather in oil and then pressing it to shape, sometimes adorned with decorative motifs impressed using metal tools. The flask has a characteristic convex profile and a flat back, to which the belt hook is attached. The upper part is fitted with an iron mount incorporating a powder measure with a hinged push-button mechanism, designed to dispense a constant charge of powder. The iron mount is attached to the leather body with screws.
