Powder Flask Manufactured In Northern Italy
A characteristic Italian powder flask, with an elegant, curved profile and iron mounts. The wooden body is covered in black boiled leather and richly decorated with a central medallion flanked by mythical creatures (probably harpies or phoenixes) and a lion. A continuous frieze of Renaissance floral ornaments runs along the sides, all framed by a twisted border that highlights the fully leather-covered front. The iron mounts are riveted to the wooden body and finely chased with shell motifs.
The base is flat and bears an old inventory number. The spout, consistent with late 16th-century examples, has a spring-loaded mechanism for regulating and controlling the flow of powder.
