Tsuba, Flute Player Mito
Iron tsuba of the mokko-gata form, dating from the Edo period and attributed to the Mito school. The front depicts a flute player seated beside rock formations, with finely executed floral details in gold and shakudō. The surface has a natural, textured background, typical of the school's aesthetic.
The back is decorated with a small river, surrounded by golden flowers. Although the kozuka-ana and kogai-ana are present, they are filled with an alloy and non-functional, suggesting later non-military or ceremonial use. This example reflects the importance placed on decoration, characteristic of the Mito tradition.
