Germany produced large quantities of antler powder pouches during the Renaissance. The finest pieces were made in the south of the country, in Nuremberg and Augsburg. The quality of these pouches varies considerably, ranging from engraved models to the most beautiful examples carved in high relief, sometimes even adorned with tools, compasses, or sundials.

Our example: A pristine example, dating from the early 17th century, typical of the Renaissance style, with a high-relief depicting the Judgment of Solomon. This famous biblical episode teaches that true wisdom reveals genuine love and that true justice stems from compassion and understanding. A popular scene, often depicted in artwork of this period. Many of these pouches were carved in the style of engravings by renowned German artists such as Albrecht Dürer, and later by illustrators like Jost Amman, who specialized in 16th-century costumes—an influence clearly visible on this example.

The fittings are made of gilded iron. The original belt hook is still in place. The branches of the bottle terminate in matching iron caps at the top, which hold a long spout fitted with a lever closure and a spring-loaded shut-off device at the base; the spout also serves as a powder dispenser.
