Saber From Officer Of "chasseurs De Vincennes"
This saber is the 1838 officer's model known as "des chasseurs de Vincennes", which later became the "Chasseurs d'Orléans" and then "Chasseurs à pied". Its particularity ist o have been made in Châtellerault and not in Klingenthal like most of these sabers. It can be dated precisely between 1866 and 1872. The inscription A.Chassepot, ENTREPR eur (=entrepreneur) à Châtellerault (Pierre Auguste Chassepot active from 14/10/1866 to 31/12/1878, not to be confused with Antoine Alphonse Chassepot, his nephew and inventor of the well-known rifle) and on the shoulder of the blade we find the "S" in a lozenge, which is the mazrk of the controller Schutz, active from 1853 to 1872
The quality of the chasing, and the inner part of the hiltwhich is also chased, indicate a good quality workmanship. The steel scabbard corresponds to the models worn during the Second Empire. The fact that the scabbard has one suspension ring only indicates that it was probably worn after 1882.
BLADE: this is the fully regulation blade characteristic of the model, with a "rush" back and two flat faces.faces. The last third of the blade has an edge and a counter-edge. The back of the blade is marked: A Chassepot, entrep eur àChâtellerault On the shoulder of the outer face, mark stamped with a spangled S in a lozenge by Schutz controller
Blade length = 75.5 cm, width at heel = 2.9 cm,thickness at heel = 7 mm
MOUNT : Finely chased gilded brass guard, outside and inside, decorated with 4 flags, oak and laurel leaves, stars. knuckle bow with median decoration, long-tailed cap with medallion decoration.
GRIP in brown horn with twisted brass wire binding .
SCABBARD : in sheet steel with one single ring .
