Louis XVI-style Portico Clock In Marble And Gilt Bronze, Late 19th Century
Louis XVI-style portico clock in marble and gilt bronze, late 19th century
Mantel clock of the so-called « portico » type, in the Louis XVI style, French work of the late 19th century or the very first years of the 20th. A model from the Parisian production of mantel sets, in which a series-made movement is combined with a carefully executed casing of stone and bronze.
Marble veined with violet, mauve and honey tones. Base with a central projection, made of a core faced with applied marble slabs, a construction typical of this type of production and entirely original.
Portico architecture: two tapering columns, set on gadrooned gilt-bronze plinths, topped with Ionic capitals with volutes and dentils, themselves surmounted by leafy pine-cone finials. Between them, the movement drum, encircled by a wide bronze drapery with folds and fringes, very crisply modelled.
At the top, a fine bronze trophy with the attributes of love: a flaming torch, a quiver filled with arrows, roses and tied laurel branches. On each column, an applied flaming torch within a laurel wreath. The base is underlined by a row of beads, decorated on its projecting part with a laurel garland, and stands on four gilt-bronze toupie feet.
White enamel dial with Arabic numerals and minute track, enhanced with fine painted garlands of roses and periwinkles, in the taste of late 19th-century dials. Beaded bezel, convex glass, pierced gilt-brass hands. Paris movement with two barrels, striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, thread suspension, the pendulum formed by a bob with a radiant sun mask, in very pleasing relief.
Marks noted: number 2126 stamped on the back plate, 3448 T engraved under the base.
Condition: overall gilding well preserved, warm and contrasted, with wear and darkened areas on the trophy at the top and on the foliage, as is usual on these projecting reliefs. The movement does not work: one winding arbor turns endlessly, the other is jammed; a service by a clockmaker is required before it can run again. Key missing. Opening the back also requires holding the bezel ring and the cover together, as the ring comes loose when pulled. Nothing affecting the casing, which is complete and presentable as it is.
Suggested settings: a mantelpiece, a console, a pier table or a library shelf. A decorative object as it is, to be serviced by a clockmaker for anyone wishing to hear it strike again.
