Windsor Low-back Chair, Solid Elm, England, 19th Century

Windsor armchairs, known as “Low Back” chairs, with armrests and a low, curved back. Elm. English work, 19th century.

The seat is carved from a single solid piece of elm, sculpted and hollowed through use, and shaped according to the distinctive anatomical form characteristic of these exceptional rustic chairs. The raw surface retains its original dry, golden patina, bearing witness to authentic wear and almost two centuries of continuous use.

The semicircular back consists of a curved rail of steam-bent ash, sweeping around in a horseshoe-shaped arc to embrace the sitter’s back. Turned spindle and miniature baluster supports are joined by a pierced back splat decorated with a scroll motif inspired by simplified Chippendale designs. Flanked by two armrests descending in a gentle curve.

The base comprises four turned baluster legs with multiple ring turnings, slightly splayed. An H-shaped stretcher beneath the seat ensures the rigidity and stability of the structure.

Condition: Remarkable, unrestored patina. Very good overall condition. Wear consistent with age and use. A split knot is present on the armrest, but in no way affects the chair’s use or structural integrity (see last photograph). No restoration required.

A finely made chair, with generous grain and robust construction. A fine example of English provincial craftsmanship and the taste for refined vernacular furniture. Although entirely functional, this armchair displays a distinct architectural elegance, enhanced by the restraint of its design and the quality of its turned elements.
