Haute Époque Italian walnut cabinet, 17th-century Piedmontese stipo monetiere with eight drawers and lozenge-panelled door

A 17th-century walnut cabinet, known as a stipo monetiere, or coin cabinet, North Italian work, most likely Piedmontese. Its rigorously symmetrical façade arranges two columns of four drawers around a door adorned with a large lozenge, beneath a projecting cornice: a geometric vocabulary inherited from the Renaissance, in which a Spanish influence can be discerned. The walnut has acquired a warm brown patina, and the cabinet retains its original ironwork, lock and key. Most probably intended for the safekeeping of coins and valuable papers, it now lends itself to housing a collection, documents or small objects, in a study, a library or an entrance hall.

Walnut cabinet, pine interior. Quadrangular carcase surmounted by a strongly projecting moulded cornice. The façade opens at the centre by a recessed door, its panel set with a large moulded lozenge framed by four spandrels, beneath a frieze. On either side, two columns of four superposed drawers, their fronts outlined by moulded surrounds and fitted with small knob pulls. The interior is fitted with three fixed shelves; small concealed compartments beneath the lower board.

Baroque style, in the late Renaissance tradition; Spanish influences perceptible in the geometric treatment of the decoration.
Presented as a tall cabinet on two square-section pillars with moulded bases and capitals, the shafts decorated with round-arched arcading. This stand is a later addition: the cabinet originally rested on a low stand or on a chest.
Very good overall condition. Original ironwork and lock, in working order, with their key. Slight play in the stand, which disappears once the cabinet is placed against the wall. Discreet wall fixing is recommended, as for any tall, shallow piece of furniture. Sturdy construction. Checked by a cabinetmaker and treated against woodworm.
