Pair of shaped oval serving platters, silver plate on nickel silver, by the house of Christofle, circa 1920.
Provenance: the Hôtel Beau Rivage in Annecy, whose BR monogram, engraved in interlaced letters on the rim of each platter, is still perfectly legible.

Hotel silver, that is to say the sturdiest category of Christofle's production: a very thick nickel-silver base, reinforced plating, pieces designed for the daily service of a large dining room. Their weight bears witness to it — 3 kg for the large platter, 2.4 kg for the other — as does the rigidity of the rim, which the hand feels immediately.

Classic shape in the Louis XV spirit: a deeply hollowed oval well, a wide shaped lobed rim, edged with a double-fillet moulding that forms four crossettes and catches the light all around. No other decoration, only the monogram — the sobriety of hotel tableware, which explains how easily these pieces sit in a contemporary interior.

Well-struck hallmarks on the back of both platters: the Christofle & Cie chess-pawn CC mark, used until 1935, the rectangular cartouche CHRISTOFLE in full, the square « métal blanc CC » mark, and the serial numbers 2642225 for the small platter and 2651539 for the large one. Added to these are the figures 87 and 132, which most likely indicate the weight of silver deposited on each piece: a reinforced quality of plating, befitting a hotel order.

Two complementary sizes, one for a whole fish or large roasts, the other for vegetables, charcuterie and cheeses. Also perfect on a sideboard, as a table centrepiece, or set on a console or serving table to hold fruit, candles or mail. Suitable for service; hand wash only.

Used condition, honest and without unpleasant surprises. The large platter, the better preserved: two small spots in the well where the plating has worn away, revealing the bronze tone of the nickel silver, and very light surface knocks that enliven the well without showing when on display. The small platter has two more pronounced losses of plating in the centre, with the same bronze appearance, a few knocks forming a line in the well, and a very slight warp: laid flat, it rocks a little. The network of fine criss-cross scratches on both is the normal mark of cutlery after a century of service. Nothing that hinders use or calls for intervention; replating by a silversmith remains possible for anyone wanting the shine of new, but this hotel-silver patina is what gives them their character.
